With a month left until Calgary city council is set to vote on whether to proceed with a bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games, Calgary musicians are feeling optimistic about the outcome of the upcoming election.
“I think it’s really exciting that we have such an incredible opportunity to showcase our city to the world and bring more attention to Calgary and our incredible music scene,” said Yiming Liang, a Calgary musician who has been active in the city’s music community for years. “I think it’s going to be a win-win for everyone.”
Liang said he’s heard from many of his musician friends who are excited about the potential of hosting the Olympics and Paralympic Games, which could bring in thousands of visitors from around the world. “We could have some really amazing concerts for them to come and see.”
Liang also believes that if Calgary wins the bid, it could be a boon for Calgary’s music industry, both through increased tourism dollars and through the creation of new venues or opportunities for existing ones. “We have a lot of music venues here already, but we could use some more,” he said. “It could be really beneficial for us.”
He also pointed out that hosting the Olympics and Paralympic Games would provide an opportunity for Calgary musicians to showcase their skills on a larger stage, potentially leading to opportunities for exposure and career advancement. “If we can get people from all over the world here, it would be great exposure for us as musicians.”
But there are still concerns that need to be addressed before the city decides whether or not to proceed with a bid, Liang said. He believes that any plan for the Olympics and Paralympic Games must include funding for infrastructure improvements and public transportation, as well as measures to mitigate any potential negative impacts on Calgary’s existing businesses and residents. “We need to make sure we have a plan in place that’s sustainable and fair for everyone.”
Liang said he’s hopeful that Calgary city council will make the right decision when they vote on whether or not to proceed with a bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games. “I think they’re very aware of the potential benefits and opportunities, but they also need to take into account any potential impacts.”Email Protection
